The story of Georgia Tech Europe
When the former Mayor of Metz Jean-Marie Rausch decided to create the technological park in 1990, the Georgia Institute of Technology was brought from overseas. During its first year, the European campus Georgia Tech Lorraine welcomed 4 students. While the campus grew, more and more students come to Metz to discover and get a taste of the European culture. In 2022, Georgia Tech Lorraine became Georgia Tech Europe, this rebranding creates a more recognizable name and expand the Georgia Tech brand in the region and greater Europe. The change means greater partnerships with European institutions and opportunities for increased student involvement with European industry. Since 1990, Georgia Tech Europe has served more than 11,000 students from all over the world and proudly played host to some of the finest academic programming, schools, and research centers in Europe.

Campus life
Students can enjoy many activities on campus, first in the Lounge dedicated to work but also to leisure with a ping-pong table, a pool table, a collection of books and a foosball.
Each semester, a group of volunteer students get together to become the STUDENT EVENT COMMITTEE. With the help of the logistics assistant, the committee organizes outings and activities such as cooking classes, a rock climbing evening, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and more.
Leonardo Program
For several years now, the Leonardo Program has linked science and culture at Georgia Tech-Europe. Its wide-ranging program with many local partners opens the doors of European culture to students from all over the world. Students can enjoy and participate to many projects such as:
- A timeline in the Student Lounge that retraces the six degrees of separation between the U.S. and the Grand Est Region.
- A Porsche green acoustic piano for them to play.
- A Stairway Gallery, in the building’s central staircase with students’ travel photographs and scientific images.
- A collection of books mainly focused on arts, architecture, fashion and more… The collection also contains a wide selection of classic European literature that students can borrow.
THE TIMELINE
A timeline was installed along the back wall of the student lounge in Spring 2022 — archives, history, and tributes connect the U.S. to the Grand Est. It includes a copy of Martin Waldseemüller’s 1507 world map, created not far from Metz in Saint- Die-des-Vosges. It’s the first printed map of the world on which the name “America” appears. This chronological timeline allows students and visitors to contextualize our presence in Metz and to learn more about important historical figures who have stayed in Metz, in particular Alexis de Tocqueville, the Marquis de La Fayette, and Auguste Bartholdi (sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, and a native of nearby Colmar, France).
With a little research, we discovered that many Georgia Tech students fought in France and the Grand Est Region during the first and second world wars. A commemorative plaque pays tribute to the 10 Yellow Jackets who perished during the world wars and are buried on French soil; some WWI soldiers are buried near Metz in the American cemetery of Saint-Mihiel, and WWII soldiers are buried in the Saint-Avold cemetery.
For each tableau on the timeline, QR codes lead to supplementary information.
THE PIANO
In January 2023, an acoustic piano equipped with a silent mode was added to the student lounge. Clad in Porsche Green lacquer, the piano has an optical silencer that digitally reproduces the sound of the keys so that students can play with headphones on. For live entertainment, students can play the piano with sound as well. The new piano is a welcome addition to the digital keyboard that students have long enjoyed in the Kiosk.
THE GALLERY
The latest addition to the scene is a Stairway Gallery of scientific images and travel photos contributed by students and researchers. Named the “GTE Stairway Gallery,” the school’s central stairway now showcases Science, Technology, Arts, Innovation and Research (STAIR) at the heart of Georgia Tech-Europe. It also showcases drawings created by students during the Leonardo program’s drawing courses. All in all, students love the Gallery, and it gives a different perspective of our campus for visitors.
